Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation

The Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation (GKCF) is a Lebanese-registered non-governmental organisation working to improve the educational, cultural, economic and social lIMG_4915ife of Palestinian children and youth in Lebanon. Founded in 1974, its activities include kindergartens, art projects, training, libraries and publications. Its habilitation preschool in Mar Elias, Beirut, offers disabled children the opportunity to learn in an educational, interactive and safe environment and empowers them to function and participate more effectively in society. It provides them with special education, physical, occupational, speech, drama and dance movement therapy, as well as psychotherapy and general medical check-ups. It also offers much needed support to their families, including support groups and individual psychological intervention for parents. GKCF also designs and manufactures assistive devices for children to use outside of the preschool, and adapts homes in which children with disabilities live.

Since the outbreak of war in Syria there has been a large influx into Lebanon in the number of Syrian refugees seeking support for children with disabilities. In 2016 and 2017, the Asfari Foundation is supporting GKCF’s habilitation preschool. Asfari funding in 2016 provided support for 38 Syrian children and their families.
